About This Image
This issue of Preventing Chronic Disease is the first in a
series of 3 that includes papers from the Mobilizing Action Toward
Community Health (MATCH) project. The first set of papers explores the
different metrics for evaluating population health. The cover for this
issue combines, in the form of a bar chart, images that illustrate
population and indicators that can be used to measure health. The
treatment of the image is based on the Works Progress Administration (WPA) posters of the 1930s, in which
the public were given friendly, clear instruction on health issues such
as what foods to eat each day for good nutrition, how often and for what
symptoms to see a doctor, efficient ways to conserve resources, and so
on. The symbolism in these posters was often simple, limited-color
screenprints of iconographic objects. The MATCH articles in this issue
offer insights and suggestions on important metrics to use in evaluating population health.
