Perceptions of Individual and Community Environmental Influences on Fruit and Vegetable Intake — North Carolina, 2004
The framework of determinants of physical activity and eating
behavior consists of 7 concentric rings
categorized from the innermost to the outermost ring as follows:
psychobiologic core, cultural, social, enablers of choice, behavioral
settings, proximal leverage points, distal leverage points. Each ring
consists of specific factors that are separate from those in other rings.
The individual’s environment includes the psychobiologic core, and cultural
and social segments. Positioned between the individual and the external
environments are the enablers of choice. A dotted line that encircles
enablers of choice is labeled “Lifestyle.” The remaining 3 outermost rings
in the framework represent the extrinsic environment. The first of these 3
is labeled behavioral settings. Proximal leverage points are
the next ring, followed by distal leverage points.
