Virginia
Background: The Virginia WISEWOMAN program is part of the
Virginia Department of Health’s Every Woman’s Life program (the Virginia
Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program). Virginia WISEWOMAN
has been funded since 2008.
Lifestyle Intervention: Virginia uses the Michigan Health
Partnership, adapted for its population. Lifestyle counselors provide
health screenings, counseling, materials, education and referrals to
community resources on physical activity, healthy eating and smoking
cessation.
Screening: Risk factor screening includes blood pressure,
glucose, cholesterol as well as assessing weight, medical history,
tobacco use, poor diet and physical activity.
Sites: Approximately eight sites will be recruited including
state health departments, community health centers, hospitals and
private practices.
Key Partners: Virginia Department of Health’s Heart Disease
and Stroke Prevention program, Diabetes Prevention and Control program
and Tobacco Use and Control project.
