“Lights, Camera, Call to Action: Spotlight on Oral Health” was the theme
of the 2004 National Oral Health Conference (NOHC). The conference was the
5th joint annual meeting between the American Association of Public
Health Dentistry (AAPHD) and the Association of State and Territorial
Dental Directors (ASTDD). Major funding was provided by CDC.
Attendees included public health officials, health researchers, dentists
and dental hygienists, dental and health educators, legislators, Medicaid/SCHIP
dental representatives, community health center personnel, dental students,
as well as dental suppliers and dental insurance companies.
Scientific sessions provided information on effective state and
community programs as well as the latest information on effective
activities to promote oral health and prevent disease. The overall focus of
the 2004 Conference was
on means to increase collaboration, overcome barriers to providing
effective programs, and increase oral health workforce diversity, capacity,
and flexibility.
Actor/Director Rob Reiner spoke at the closing plenary on his work with First 5, a California early childhood program that
recently invested $10 million towards two major oral health projects to
improve the oral health of young children.
