Malaria Branch
DPD's Malaria Branch works to:
- Conduct malaria surveillance, prevention, and control activities in the United States
- Conduct multidisciplinary research, in the laboratory and in the field, to develop new tools and improve existing interventions against malaria worldwide
- Translate, when applicable, findings from research into effective public health practice
- Provide consultation, technical assistance, and training as requested by outside agencies
Domestic Team
The Domestic Team ensures the United States remains malaria-free. The Team:
- administers the national malaria surveillance system
- investigates and controls instances of domestically aquired malaria
- produces risk-based malaria prevention guidelines for U.S. travelers
- investigtes ways to improve the effectiveness of malaria prevention efforts amoung high risk U.S. travelers
- provides a 24/7 hotline for assistance with diagnosis and treatment of malaria in the U.S.
Laboratory Research & Development Team
The Laboratory Research & Development Team conducts research, provides services to the Malaria Branch, and develops reagents that will identify, promote, or facilitate the control and prevention of malaria. The Team focuses on:
- Host-Parasite Interaction
- Host-Parasite & Molecular Cell Biology
- Host-Parasite Genetics & Immunology
- Clinical Immunology & Molecular Epidemiology
Program Implementation Team
The Program Implementation Team provides evidence-based guidance to Ministries of Health for the scale-up, monitoring, and evaluation of malaria control programs.
Strategic & Applied Sciences Team
The Strategic and applied sciences team aims to improve our understanding of malaria and to yield better methods for fighting the disease.
