Celebrating World Hepatitis
Day
The Division of Viral Hepatitis of the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) is sponsoring a national poster contest in honor of
World Hepatitis Day on May 19, 2008, along with our cosponsor, the National
Viral Hepatitis Roundtable.
Poster Contest Winners Announced!
Official Contest Rules
Legal residents of the United States and Canada
of amateur and professional status are eligible to participate. Organizations
conducting business in the United States who would like to submit a group
entry are also eligible to participate. Employees of CDC and their immediate
families are not eligible to participate. In addition, CDC contractors and
contest sponsors are not eligible. Any participant who is a minor in his
or her jurisdiction of primary residence must obtain the permission of his
or her parent or legal guardian to participate. Void wherever restricted
or prohibited by law.
Participants should create and submit a poster in one
of the following categories:
- Category 1. General Viral Hepatitis
Awareness
This category seeks entries that raise awareness about
viral hepatitis in the United States.
Poster themes in this category can include, but are not limited to,
the following:
- Viral hepatitis is a serious public health
problem.
- Many Americans are infected with viral
hepatitis.
- Category 2. Hepatitis B
This category seeks entries that raise awareness about
acute or chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Poster themes
can include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Many people are infected with HBV and don’t
know it.
- People from Asia and the Pacific Islands
are disproportionately affected by chronic HBV infection.
- Hepatitis B can be prevented through vaccination.
- Category 3. Hepatitis C
This category seeks entries that raise awareness about
chronic infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV). Poster themes can include,
but are not limited to, the following:
- Many people are infected with HCV and don’t
know it.
- Hepatitis C is a silent disease.
Each individual or organization is allowed only
one entry per category.

A grand prize of $1,000 will be awarded to the best
poster from all the contest entries. A $250 prize will be awarded to the
top entry in each category. Winning posters will be featured on CDC’s Web
site, printed, and distributed nationally once appropriate government clearances
are obtained.
CDC and the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable are
the sponsors of this contest.
Poster Artwork Requirements
- Poster artwork must be original and must be
accompanied by a signed contest release form.
- Persons who are photographed and appear on
any submitted poster must sign a photography release form. This form
must be submitted with the contest release form where applicable.
- Posters may be handmade, computer-generated,
or computer-enhanced.
- Posters submitted via hard copy should measure
at least 8 ˝” x 11” but no larger than 11” X 17”. In addition, posters
should be no more than 2” thick.
- Handmade entries should be created with materials
that can be easily reproduced, such as markers, paint (watercolor, tempera,
acrylic), photographs, collage, etc.
- Lettering and messages on all posters should
be bold enough and large enough to reproduce well and be appropriate
for promotional/marketing purposes.
- Copyrighted characters, trademarks, registered
trademarks, product logos, and brand names are prohibited.
- Posters that include endorsements of products,
corporations, or organizations (other than CDC) or that are deemed vulgar
or offensive will be disqualified.
Judges and Judging Criteria
Entries will be judged by a panel of experts from the
CDC and its partners. Judges will assess each entry for:
- Creativity
- Originality
- Quality of the artwork
- Scientific accuracy
- Reproducibility
Winning entries must be in accordance with scientific
and government printing requirements. CDC will alter winning entries to
conform to necessary scientific and printing requirements, including, but
not limited to, adding CDC and Health and Human Services (HHS) logos.
Submissions must be submitted by Friday, April 18,
2008. Electronic entries must be time stamped by midnight EST. Hard copies
must be postmarked by April 18 and received by April 24. Late entries/receipts
cannot be considered.
Each entry must consist of two elements: the poster
artwork and a contest release form. Entries that do not include both of
these elements will not be considered.
Posters and release forms may be submitted in one
of the following ways:
- Electronic submission – All
electronic entries must be received by the contest deadline. Please
follow these steps when submitting an electronic entry:
- Address a new e-mail message with the following
details:
- Attach poster and release form files to
the e-mail message or fax to 202-729-4001 (Attn: Hepatitis Poster

- Before sending the e-mail message, check
your submission for the following:
- Format – All electronic entries must
be in PDF, JPG, or TIF format. A zip file including these formats
is also acceptable.
- File Size – The size limit for each
e-mail message (body + attachments) is 5MB. If your entry exceeds
5MB, you must place all files on a CD-ROM and submit your entry
by hard copy using the instructions below.
- Requirements - Ensure that your poster
adheres to the artwork requirements outlined above.
- Hard copy submission – All
hard copy entries should be postmarked by the contest deadline. Please
follow these steps when submitting an electronic entry:
- Check your submission for the following:
- Summary information – For hard copy
entries (except CD-ROMs), participant’s name, poster title,
category, and selected category/theme must be written on the
back of the poster.
- Requirements - Ensure that your poster
adheres to the artwork requirements outlined above.
