National Environmental Public Health Tracking - Network Implementation
Program Announcement # EH06-601
Program Description:
The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS), in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), has set two goals for the New Jersey Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) Network Implementation program:
- Build a sustainable statewide EPHT Network for New Jersey.
- Contribute to the building of the National EPHT Network.
The public will access the NJ EPHT Network via the Web using the New Jersey State Health Assessment Data (NJ SHAD) system. NJ SHAD, hosted by the NJDHSS Center for Health Statistics, will contain EPHT indicators and allow for custom queries of selected datasets. The NJ SHAD system will also contain indicators and datasets on health outcomes not environmentally related. The NJ EPHT Network on the NJ SHAD system will serve as a vital information resource for the public, government officials, health care providers, community organizations, and researchers.
The NJDHSS and NJDEP maintain many high quality health, exposure, and environmental hazard databases. The NJ EPHT Network will bring together information on selected environmental hazards and health outcomes for New Jersey, including
- Asthma and heart attack,
- Carbon monoxide poisonings,
- Cancer,
- Blood lead levels in children
- Birth defects,
- Drinking water contaminants
- Air quality, and
- Vital statistics.
