State Program in Brief
The state’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Program is:
- Promoting and disseminating the Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan.
- Developing a series of one-page, site-specific handouts on evidence-based/best-practice strategies to support the state plan.
- Strengthening the Wisconsin Partnership for Activity and Nutrition to provide statewide leadership for the implementation of the state plan and obesity prevention efforts.
- Partnering with the Department of Public Instruction to implement the pilot Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program in 25 schools.
In addition, the program has developed:
- A checklist of physical-activity criteria for plans developed by metropolitan planning organizations.
- A capacity-building training plan for local nutrition and physical-activity coalitions and similar community groups to implement the state plan and evidence-based interventions.
- A worksite wellness resource kit to help prevent obesity and related chronic diseases.
- A fruit and vegetable audit tool, which helps assess community access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
- The Governor’s School Health Award, which recognizes schools that have made environmental and policy changes to support a healthful school environment.
- The Footprints to Health – Franklin Neighborhood Initiative, a nutrition and physical activity intervention targeting parents of elementary-school-age children.
- Got Dirt?, a toolkit for creating childcare, school, and community gardens to improve access to fruits and vegetables.
