State Program in Brief
Currently, West Virginia’s nutrition and physical activity efforts focus primarily on change at the individual level. When the state physical activity and nutrition plan is completed, it will emphasize policy and environmental change that supports individual behavior-change programs. Past state efforts have included the following:
- The West Virginia on the Move program has run several pilot projects, including Physicians on the Move, Schools on the Move, and Seniors on the Move.
- Action for Healthy Kids developed policies around physical activity and nutrition, which were presented to the state Legislature.
- The state program collaborated with the West Virginia Main Street project to strengthen “walkable community” efforts.
- The state program collaborated with regional health promotion specialists to build policy and environmental support for local physical activity and nutrition efforts.
