State Program in Brief
The Washington State Nutrition and Physical Activity Plan focuses on policy and environmental change; the department of health and its partners are currently developing indicators to measure progress in these areas. State-supported efforts and interventions that are underway include the following:
- Kittitas County and the cities of Moses Lake, Mount Vernon, Spokane, Puyallup, and Marysville are making creative policy and environmental changes in schools, worksites, and other community settings that help residents choose healthful foods and find places to be physically active.
- The Access to Healthy Foods Coalition brings together a diverse group of partners, including agriculture, food processors and growers, vending machine operators, restaurants, military, physicians, non-profit organizations and others, to increase the availability of health-promoting foods.
- The statewide Washington Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity (WCPPA) is working to enhance people’s health, fitness, and the quality of life by advocating for policies and environments that encourage people of all abilities and ages to be physically active.
- The Active Community Environments Project aims to increase active living for people of all ages and disabilities through infrastructure that supports active community environments.
- An intervention to reduce sedentary behaviors by training childcare providers focuses on the environment at childcare centers and in out-of-school programs for children and youth.
- A TV-reduction toolkit for all early childhood programs includes materials on the effects of too much TV, a discussion guide for parent groups, and a variety of other materials for parenting classes.
- The Breastfeeding Assessment Project is helping create breastfeeding-friendly environments in communities across the state.
- The state Action for Healthy Kids team works with schools to make more healthful foods available and to find ways for young people to be more physically active.
- The Worksite Health and Productivity Project works with the Association of Washington Cities and the Washington State Dairy Council to host a Worksite Wellness Summit for to small- and medium-sized businesses; the project also supports small grants to businesses to support policy and environmental efforts to increase employee access to healthful foods and physical activity.
- The Primary Prevention in Health Care Project addresses barriers to reducing chronic disease.
- Implementation of the state nutrition and physical activity plan is moving forward with the participation of many partners from around the state.
- Partner trainings are being conducted in cities around the state on topics ranging from active community environments to community leadership skills.
