State Program in Brief
The South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) launched the State Plan
for Nutrition and Physical Activity in April 2006. The state has
since been joined by a variety of new partners ― e.g., parents and
caregivers, schools and youth organizations, employers, healthcare
providers, and the community ― in its efforts to focus on plan
objectives.
DOH publishes an annual School Height and Weight Report that
includes guidance on preventing obesity for parents, children, teachers,
coaches, and school food-service staff. The department also works with
the Department of Education and Social Services to address nutrition and
physical activity issues. Recently, DOH also:
- Worked through the state board of education to mandate one semester of either health or physical education as a graduation requirement.
- Expanded the Healthy South Dakota Web site, a source of information on healthful eating and physical activity for a variety of audiences.
- Developed the Strides to a Healthier Community and Strides to a Healthier Worksite technical assistance guides to help plan and develop programs supporting environmental and policy changes.
- Implemented the Stairwell to Better Health Project in various state government buildings.
- Received a Healthy States Grant from the National Governors Association to expand worksite wellness outreach to rural and disparate populations.
- Released results of a survey of TV-viewing habits among preschool and Head Start children.
The state is planning to:
- Develop a clinical toolkit for health care providers.
- Develop a system to evaluate the state plan’s impact.
- Expand the number and diversity of partners outside state government that participate in state plan implementation.
- Enhance the Healthy South Dakota Web site with a wellness database to collect information about worksites and provide assessment data.
- Develop an intervention that addresses policies and environments in childcare centers.
