State Program in Brief
In 2004, the state Division of Obesity Prevention and Control helped create the South Carolina Coalition for Obesity Prevention Efforts (SCCOPE) to develop a state plan for obesity prevention and control. This coalition represents business and industry, community, faith-based settings, healthcare systems, and schools. Its efforts aim to increase physical activity, fruits and vegetable consumption, breastfeeding rates, proportion of people at a healthful weight, and research on obesity, while decreasing screen time and the burden of obesity-related chronic diseases.
In June 2005, the coalition launched Moving South Carolina Towards a
Healthy Weight: Promoting Healthy Lifestyles and Healthy Communities, a
comprehensive framework for preventing overweight and obesity. The coalition
has also developed and implemented a community physical activity and
nutrition intervention for childcare settings. Other ongoing projects
include:
- Establishing a state-based obesity surveillance system.
- Implementing a Color Me Healthy curriculum in preschools and childcare settings.
- Broadening obesity-prevention knowledge among key state and local partners through training, technical assistance, and meetings.
- Developing a state obesity burden report.
- Developing and publishing fact sheets on childhood overweight and adult obesity.
- Developing a farmers’ market “how to” toolkit for communities.
- Distributing breastfeeding wallet cards to new mothers.
- Developing a Web-based physical activity directory.
- Collaborating with Action for Healthy Kids to help implement recently enacted physical activity and nutrition requirements in schools.
