State Program in Brief
North Carolina’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Program to Prevent Obesity and Other Chronic Diseases is working to improve the health of North Carolinians through multilevel policy and environmental change in a variety of local settings. Several efforts are underway.
- The program’s Eat Smart, Move More…North Carolina movement is encouraging healthful eating and physical activity wherever people live, learn, earn, play, and pray.
- The state’s fight against obesity is being guided by Eat Smart, Move More: North Carolina’s Plan to Prevent Overweight, Obesity and Related Chronic Diseases.
- Each year, the program is awarding Eat Smart, Move More grants to local health departments and their partners.
- The program’s Worksites Eating Smart and Moving More Toolkit is giving employers a variety of resources for changing workplace policies, practices, and environments.
In addition, the state program recently:
- Released Eat Smart Move More…North Carolina County Profiles, which defines the extent of the obesity problem in each county, describes efforts to address obesity in those counties, and encourages local decision makers to work together to create solutions.
- Held the inaugural Move More Scholars Institute, a four-day course for community-based, physical-activity professionals.
- Conducted train-the-trainer sessions on how to implement African-American Churches Eating Smart and Moving More: A Planning and Resource Guide.
- Began a collaboration between the Division of Public Health and several other state agencies to develop a common strategic plan for building statewide physical activity infrastructure.
