State Program in Brief
To address Iowa’s epidemic of overweight and obesity, the state Department of Health is implementing a comprehensive state plan for nutrition and physical activity. The Iowans Fit for Life Partnership, a joint initiative between the Department of Health and its partners, has prioritized these areas: education, early childhood, older Iowans, business and agriculture, health care, community, and policy and communication. Iowans Fit for Life is implementing a pilot intervention in 12 schools and communities across the state that aims to make healthful foods and physical activity a greater part of people’s lives. Recently, the Department of Health also:
- Implemented a National Governor’s Association grant aimed at improving the local/regional food system as well as physical activity opportunities in three areas of Iowa.
- Partnered with local public and private organizations to implement six mini-grants aimed at improving nutrition and physical activity for school-age children outside of school.
- Collaborated with the Healthy Children Task Force to develop legislation recommendations for improving the nutrition and physical activity status of Iowa’s children.
