State Program in Brief
The Illinois Department of Health’s Obesity Steering Committee is working to formalize a statewide nutrition and physical activity partnership as well as complete a state nutrition and physical activity plan. Recently, Illinois has:
- Expanded the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) program to an additional 24 schools, adding approximately 6,700 new students to the program.
- Collaborated extensively with Illinois Action for Healthy Kids on school wellness policy activities.
- Created a committee to assess local school wellness policies through, among other means, an online needs-assessment survey for elementary-, middle-, and high-school principals.
- Helped the Illinois Atherosclerosis Advisory Committee develop its proposed Stop the Gain campaign.
The state plans to
- Conduct a pilot pre-K physical activity and nutrition training program for staff from one Head Start center.
- Provide a master training component for CATCH.
- Develop an additional school wellness policy survey for school-based wellness coordinators.
- Support breastfeeding education and other efforts through the Illinois State Breastfeeding Task Force and regional breastfeeding coalitions.
- Help the Interagency Nutrition Council disseminate the Fruit and Veggies – More Matters™ program to all local health departments and other partners.
- Work with the state’s cancer control program to implement the Body & Soul initiative in a Millennium Neighborhood.
- Develop a worksite wellness program for the Illinois Department of Public Health, using Active Living Every Day curriculum.
