State Program in Brief
To help guide its strategic planning process, the Florida Obesity Prevention Program created the Florida Partnership for Promoting Physical Activity and Healthful Nutrition, a statewide coalition of more than 100 health care professionals, community organizations, interdepartmental programs, and interested citizens. As a result, the state recently has developed a 5-year statewide strategic plan for fighting obesity. Other obesity-related developments include the following:
- The state program created and administered a Youth Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey among middle school students.
- The Governor’s Task Force on the Obesity Epidemic helped develop nutrition and physical activity recommendations for families, schools, communities, the healthcare and insurance industries, and worksites; this has led to the formation of county-level obesity coalitions.
- The state program held a series of Secretary’s Obesity Summits, which focused on best-practice models and evidenced-based research practices for a variety of environments.
