State Program in Brief
Arizona’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Program has developed a comprehensive plan to reduce its number of overweight and obese residents, of all ages. Recently, the program has:
- Identified and recruited partners in state-plan development and implementation.
- Evaluated the extent and scope of existing services related to nutrition, physical activity, and obesity, and identified gaps to address.
- Created an inventory of key partners and relevant issues related to policy development.
- Provided mini-grants to community organizations working on healthful eating and physical activity interventions that support the state plan.
- Collaborated with professional medical associations and private industry to identify training needs and develop toolkits to bridge gaps in services.
- Identified a strategy team that is developing a pilot intervention in one Arizona community.
- Worked with the Arizona Steps Along the Border Initiative (STEPS) to promote better health and prevent disease in border communities.
- Worked with the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) to develop standards for identifying and managing childhood obesity treated through AHCCCS providers.
- Partnered with WIC and the Arizona Nutrition Network to launch the Grow a Healthy Child campaign.
- Cosponsored a Healthy Weight for Children workshop in January 2007.
In addition, the Nutrition and Physical Activity Program is working with
the Diabetes Prevention Program to develop 1) an online worksite-wellness
assessment tool and resource guide and 2) a health-care provider toolkit for
childhood overweight assessment.
