Primaquine can cause fatal hemolysis in persons
who are deficient in G6PD. The drug should not be administered
until G6PD deficiency has been excluded. Primaquine is most
often used for radical cure or terminal prophylaxis, and its
administration (30 mg primaquine base by mouth daily for 14
days) can await the test result. For persons with borderline G6PD deficiency, primaquine
may be given at the dose of 45 mg (base) orally once a week
for 8 weeks.
