Injection Drug Use by Race/Ethnicity

This chart shows the race/ethnicity of injection drugs users infected with HIV in 2006.

Remember, this chart represents 12% of all new HIV infections among whites, blacks, and Hispanics in 2006.

However, among persons in these groups who inject drugs, most new HIV infections – 53% - occurred in blacks. Whites accounted for 30% of new infections, and Hispanics 17%.

Black by Sex

Total: 3,480

This chart shows us the gender breakdown of black injection drug users newly infected with HIV in 2006. Of the estimated 6,610 white, black, and Hispanic injection drug users newly infected with HIV in 2006, more than half (3,480) were black. Black males accounted for 58% of new infections, black females 42%.

White by Sex

Total: 2,000

This chart shows us the gender breakdown of white injection drug users newly infected with HIV in 2006. Of the estimated 6,610 injection drug users newly infected with HIV in 2006, almost one-third are among whites. White males and females share almost equally in the burden, with 51% of estimated cases found among males and 50% of estimated cases among females.

Hispanic/Latino by Sex

Total: 1,130

This chart shows us the gender breakdown of Hispanic/Latino injection drug users who were newly infected with HIV in 2006. Of the estimated 6,610 injection drug users newly infected with HIV in 2006, 17% were among Hispanic/Latinos. Hispanic/Latino males accounted for 65% of cases, and Hispanic/Latino females, 35%.
