Mortality Technical Notes

Mortality

Data Source: National Vital Statistics System (NVSS), 2014, 2015

Data Tables:
Number and crude asthma mortality rate (per 1,000,000) among adults by state/territory
Number and crude asthma mortality rate (per 1,000,000) among children by state/territory

Mortality data are from the NVSS. More information on this system can be found at: www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss.htm

Mortality rates were calculated using records for which asthma was coded as the underlying causes of death, using ICD-10 codes J45 and J46.

Definitions

Adults – Persons aged 18 years and older

Children – Persons aged 17 years and younger

NACP Grantees, Total – Represents the asthma deaths for 24 states participating in the NACP, excluding Puerto Rico because Puerto Rico mortality data are not available for public use.

Asthma Death Number 2014–2015 (children) – Represents asthma deaths for children reported for years 2014 and 2015 to increase state-specific mortality reporting standards.

Unstable/Unreliable Rate – Represents mortality rates that should be interpreted with caution because the estimates are calculated with fewer than 20 deaths in the numerator.

Suppressed Rate – Represents mortality rates that are not shown because the estimates are calculated with fewer than 10 deaths in the numerator.
