Funding opportunity announced for Pathogen Genomics Centers of Excellence

This cooperative agreement will fund the establishment of several centers of excellence, each consisting of a health department and one or more academic institutions. The PGCoE network is intended to improve the public health system’s response to infectious disease threats with resilience, flexibility, and the latest practical advances in laboratory technology, scientific computing, and applied research. The network represents an unprecedented opportunity to expand and deepen collaboration between US public health agencies and universities to form a national resource that will advance genomic surveillance.

Genomic sequencing and bioinformatics analysis form a powerful tool being used to help detect, characterize, and track SARS-CoV-2 variants circulating in the United States and elsewhere in the world. The Pathogen Genomics Centers of Excellence (PGCoE) network represents an important new model to foster and improve innovation and technical capacity in the fields of pathogen genomics, molecular epidemiology, and bioinformatics to better prevent, control, and respond to microbial threats of public health importance. The PGCoE network is intended to improve the public health system’s response to infectious disease threats with resilience, flexibility, and the latest practical advances in laboratory technology, scientific computing, and applied research. The centers will work together as a network to establish a platform that will develop and identify relevant areas of genomics and related technologies, adapt them for use in public health, and pilot their application in actual settings.
