2009 National Oral Health Conference

Pursuing Excellence in Dental Public Health

April 2022, 2009
Portland, Oregon

The tenth annual joint meeting of the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD) and the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD) was held April 20–22, in Portland, Oregon. The CDC and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) co-sponsored the conference with ASTDD and AAPHD.

The conference focused on accomplishments since the release of A National Call to Action to Promote Oral Health: A Public-Private Partnership Under the Leadership of the Office of the Surgeon General, which was originally released at the 2003 National Oral Health Conference.

In the opening plenary session, Dr. Wendy Mouradian discussed last year’s Summit on Children’s Oral Health and challenges in meeting recommendations of the 2000 Surgeon General’s report and the National Call to Action. Dr. Mouradian is a developmental pediatrician, ethicist, oral health advocate, and Associate Dean of the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

Other plenary and conference sessions addressed social and personal responsibility for improving oral health, state infrastructure development, partnership development, state-based surveillance, oral health workforce capacity and diversity, oral health-promoting policy and legislation, serving special needs individuals, fluoride and enamel fluorosis surveillance, and community-based interventions for prevention and early detection of oral cancer.

Additional information and presentations, including presentations from previous years’ conferences, are available at the AAPHD Web site.*
